 Request For Comments on Bird Strike Requirements

On July 20, 2015 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requested comments on the need for, and the possible scope of, changes to the bird strike certification requirements for transport category airplanes.

The FAA has recognized an increased threat of bird strikes due to an increased population of larger birds. In response to a fatal Cessna 500 accident that occurred in 2008, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended that the FAA “revise the bird-strike certification requirements for Part 25 airplanes so that protection from in-flight impact with birds is consistent across all airframe structures.”

The FAA is not currently proposing a specific regulatory action, however they are considering whether to revise the requirements. The FAA invites comments relating to the technical or economic impact that might result from any changes to the current bird strike requirements.
